Jay Hamilton is an award-winning journalist and public relations consultant. He started out at CBS News and then formed his own company, Hamilton Productions, Inc., to produce the PBS series “Watch On Washington.” He appears regularly as an on-camera correspondent for ABC-7 News in the Nation’s Capital.
Jay shaped “Watch On Washington” into a live, interactive PBS series with members of Congress in Washington answering questions from viewers back home. The New York Times gave the series a rave review saying, “Watch on Washington shines brightly.” The Washington Times wrote, “Watch on Washington is introducing a radical new notion that a broadcast about Congress doesn’t have to be boring.” Members of Congress praised it in the Congressional Record. The series was honored with an Emmy Award by the Washington Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Jay has also led Hamilton Productions in new and exciting directions. Lobbying groups call on him to produce advocacy CD-ROM’s and DVD’s targeted toward members of Congress and regulatory agencies. The Council on Competitiveness relies on Jay for media relations, media training and policy videos that it screens at national symposiums. Jay works with top corporations on their communication needs.
Jay’s attraction to journalism began early. Even before graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism, he spent a summer writing front-page stories for a New Jersey newspaper (Morristown Daily Record) and hosting news and sports programs on radio. But the project closest to Jay’s heart is a Father’s Day golf commercial starring his five-year-old daughter Laine. She told viewers to “ditch the tie for some cool golf things.” During shooting, there was only one work stoppage when Laine negotiated for a second chocolate milkshake.
